"I never meant to betray my husband. But when you’re running for your life and trapped between your two forbidden stepsons — one whose body burns like fire, the other whose darkness pulls you under — resistance becomes impossible. On horseback, on a storm-tossed boat, and in a rattling night train with Damien sitting right there… I let them touch me. I let them ruin me. And worse — I started wanting it. Needing it. Now I’m just kilometers away from safety, yet I know I’m already completely lost. Because the woman who arrives at that safe house won’t be Damien’s loyal wife anymore. She’ll be her stepsons’ filthy, willing whore."

Elena Bennett was a hospice care worker. Eight years ago, she cared for the terminally ill Mrs. Sterling, and anonymously donated bone marrow when Adrian Sterling had leukemia. Victoria Moore falsely claimed to be his savior and blamed Elena for the death of Evelyn Sterling, causing Adrian to spend eight years humiliating, controlling, and hurting the very person who had actually saved him. After returning from abroad, Victoria used pregnancy as an excuse to usurp Elena’s place in the marriage, and hired someone to stage a traffic confrontation and block the hospital’s emergency access, causing Laura to miss the critical window for emergency treatment. After being imprisoned and subjected to near-death humiliation, Elena signed the divorce agreement and left the city with her mother’s ashes. Adrian later pieced together the truth from bone marrow donation records, recordings, medical records, diaries, and testimony. Overcome with remorse, he began trying to make amends, but none of it could undo the damage. Elena rebuilt her hospice care career in a retirement community, ultimately refused to reconcile, and tossed Adrian’s final letter straight into the trash.
