The doctor told me I had 72 hours left, unless I got access to the newest experimental treatment. However, there was only one slot available, and my husband Bowen Liddell gave it to my sister Yvonne Lawson instead. "Her kidney failure is more critical," he said. I nodded and swallowed the white pills that would only speed up my death. In the time I had left, I got a lot done. The lawyer's hand trembled as he passed me the documents. "Are you sure you want to transfer the two billion dollars in shares?" I replied, "Yes. Give them to Yvonne." My daughter, Candice Liddell, was giggling in Yvonne's arms. "Mommy Yvonne bought me a new dress!" I said, "It looks beautiful. Make sure you always listen to Mommy Yvonne, okay?" The art gallery I built from the ground up now had Yvonne's name on the sign. "You're too kind, Kathy," she said, crying. I told her, "You'll run it even better than I ever did." I even signed all my parents' trust fund away. That was when Bowen finally gave me his first genuine smile in years. "Kathleen, you've changed. You're not so aggressive anymore... You're beautiful like this." Indeed. This dying version of me finally became the 'perfect Kathleen Sullivan' in their eyes—obedient, generous, and no longer argumentative. The 72-hour countdown had already begun, and I couldn't help but wonder what they would remember when my heart stopped for good. The good wife who 'finally learned to let go', or the woman who completed her revenge by dying?

On the day Erin moves into the family’s new home, she discovers that the three bedrooms have already been assigned—to her parents, her brother, and their adopted daughter Sophie. Only Erin’s name is missing. Ten years earlier, Sophie’s father, Thomas, drowned on the same day Erin’s brother Ryan fell into the water. Their mother, Helen, has always believed that Thomas died saving Ryan, and from that moment on, she demanded that the entire family spend the rest of their lives repaying that debt. For ten years, Erin has given up her room, her parents’ attention, and her brother’s protection for Sophie. Even Ethan, the boyfriend she has been dating for three years, has gradually grown used to putting Sophie first. The final blow comes when Erin discovers that her parents, Ryan, Sophie, and Ethan all belong to a group chat called “Sophie’s Family”—a family group that includes everyone except her. When Ryan tells her, “If you don’t want to help repay what we owe her, then get out,” Erin finally gives up on them completely. Without telling anyone, she leaves for New Mexico to join a five-year aviation meteorology research program. Only after Erin is gone does the truth about the accident ten years ago finally come to light: Thomas was never the person who saved Ryan. The Carter family is devastated to realize that, in trying to repay a life-saving debt that never existed, they drove their own daughter out of the family with their own hands. Five years later, Erin returns to Portland as the leader of the research project. Faced with her remorseful family and Ethan’s desperate request for another chance, Erin chooses neither revenge nor reconciliation. She simply walks away. At last, Erin understands that a life truly belonging to her was never something anyone else needed to make room for.

Brandon Smith has flown for eight years. I've been with him since the time he was an assistant pilot, all the way until he successfully rose to the ranks as the head pilot. In the year Brandon's busiest with his career, I resign from my job and begin cooking according to his aviation schedule. Just once, I bring up the question, "Can you please show me the sight of being thousands of feet in the air in the near future? Just once, please!" Brandon continues eating from his plate. "The plane is a workplace, not an amusement park for you." I reply, "Okay." Since then, I never bring up that matter in front of him. That is, until I find myself suffering from insomnia one night. That's when I accidentally come across an encrypted photo album tucked away in Brandon's phone. There are over 40 photos in the album, all from his perspective as a pilot. There are seas of clouds, sunsets, double rainbows after a downpour, as well as the Milky Way in the night sky when the plane is over thousands of feet in the sky. Every photo has been sent to the same person with a bear's emoji as their name. The latest photo is a photo of the beautiful evening colors from three days ago. Half of the sun can be seen in the clouds. The caption that comes with the photo says, "Today's sky is still beautiful as ever. When you come over next time, you can take the observation seat on the right. It gives you the best angle of the sky." The bear emoji person responds with a hugging emoji and a short sentence. "Wait for me to go on my break." I put Brandon's phone back where it belongs without changing the password and deleting the album. Once the morning sun is up, I brew myself some coffee as usual before finishing it quietly. Then, I turn on my computer and book myself a flight ticket to Dalco. It's been eight years. Finally, I don't have to chase after Brandon's flight routes and wait for his mealtimes. I no longer have to stay in an empty house while guessing which flight destination he's headed
