"Evelyn Harper stood by Ethan Walker as he rose from nothing to build a multimillion-dollar fortune. But in the third year of their marriage, she discovered that he had been carrying on a long-term affair with her best friend, Claire Bennett. Claire repeatedly framed Evelyn by blaming her for Claire’s miscarriage, fabricating text messages, arranging false witnesses, and even switching out a protection dog. Refusing to investigate the truth, Ethan punished his wife again and again with whipping, ice water, and confinement in a dog cage. Evelyn finally took off her wedding ring, filed for divorce, pressed charges against Ethan for assault, and reclaimed the clients and business resources that she and the Harper family had brought him. Only after Evelyn left him for good did Ethan uncover Claire’s deception and realize that he had personally carried out every act of cruelty against his wife. As his career, reputation, and marriage collapsed one after another, he followed Evelyn to San Francisco and begged for forgiveness, only to be firmly rejected. Reunited with her family, Evelyn rebuilt both her career and her life. Through Ryan Carter’s years of patient and restrained devotion, she also learned to believe in love again, this time entirely on her own terms."
